Canada Day in Canada's Capital

It was the first Canada Day in the Capital for my people and me. We knew it would be a big deal, but I don't think we knew exactly how big a deal it would be. For people who have never experienced Canada Day in Ottawa, you should. It's a big deal. A really big deal.

All the streets are closed in the vicinity of Parliament Hill and the Byward Market. This means that the throngs of people are free to roam the streets. As per this picture. It's taken on Wellington, looking east from approximately the War Memorial. There's way more people behind the photographer.

This one is taken from the top of the steps along Sussex, looking down into the Byward Market. It doesn't do the size of the crowd justice. There were lots of people.

This one give a little perspective of the events taking place on stage on Parliament Hill. My people watched, or at least listened to Tomi Swick, Eva Avila, Sierra Noble (from Manitoba!) and Delhi 2 Dublin.

My people also partook in the neighbourhood Canada Day festivities (sans chien). Looks like a pretty good bash for a neighbourhood event. I'm told there were hot dogs, hamburgers and even spring rolls to eat.

Also in Ottawa right now is the FIFA U-20 World Cup of soccer. One of the teams based in Ottawa is Panama and several of their players were out enjoying the party for Canada Day, including playing keep-away with some hapless Canadians.

My people made a brief stop at the Ottawa Jazz Festival on Canada Day. What's His Name was playing.

Here's an artsy picture of the crowd on Parliament Hill at dusk. Like it?

Ever wonder what a Canada Day crowd looks like when you're less than a foot tall? Wonder no more.

One of the neatest things about Canada Day in Ottawa is the people who come from all over to enjoy it. Many of them come by boat and park their boats for a few days right downtown along the Rideau Canal. Literally there are dozens and dozens of boats stretching from downtown way back down the canal. Again, this shot give an idea of the boats, but doesn't do the number of boats justice. It's a pretty cool thing to see though. This picture was taken looking south from the Mackenzie King Bridge.
